Sound Off for Thanks Of course, we have so many ways of using words to express our thanks. But theres another way of using sound that often communicates our appreciation more powerfully than words can ever do: Nonverbal sounds. Moans, groans, squeals, and screams! Hmmmmm? One of the reasons Ive felt so appreciated by most Japanese women in conversations with them is because of the sounds (not words) they constantly utter to let me know they are listening and are interested in what I am saying. One of the reasons we feel so appreciated by our cat when she is lying on our lap and we are stroking her, is the purring sound she gives back to us. One of the reasons we feel so appreciated by our children when they like something is the spontaneous sounds they utter. One of the ways people most powerfully communicate their appreciation for our cooking is by their moans of delight as they eat what we have cooked. A major reason we feel so appreciated by our lover is the groans, the moans, and the screams stimulated by what we are doing to him. I know that it is often an act of courage for me to express my pleasure to the masseuse with moans and groans when I am getting a massage from her. I strongly suspect that the masseuses especially enjoy giving me a massage (compared with other men) because they can hear the difference they are making for me. How might you begin to choose the courage to create an intention to express your thanks and appreciation with the use of moans, groans, and other sounds? |
